First ScotRail trains set for new digital CCTV systems

HUNDREDS of trains to and from Edinburgh are being fitted with new digital CCTV systems.

First ScotRail has ordered security upgrades for more than 500 of its trains, as part of a major drive to better safeguard passengers.

Supported by the Scottish Executive, the project - which commences later this year and is due for completion in 2007 - includes the installation of around 2000 cameras.

Andy Mellors, engineering director of First ScotRail, said: "It is essential that the travelling public can feel confident and secure in their travelling environment.

"We were impressed with the high quality images and ease of download from the new digital technology involved in the [contractor's] solution and are pleased to see this project progressing."

Andy Kevins, sales and marketing director of security company Petards Joyce-Loebl, added: "This project reflects the increasing importance placed by the UK rail industry on improving on-train security for staff and passengers."

The digital CCTV system that will be fitted to First ScotRail's trains has been developed by Petards Joyce-Loebl specifically for the railway industry.
