Firework safety warning from eye experts

Revellers have been warned to protect their eyes from fireworks in the run up to Halloween and Guy Fawkes night.

Research shows ten people in the UK lose their sight every year due to fireworks and around 300 eye injuries in total occur each year.

More than half of all injuries involving fireworks are among children.

The College of Optometrists has said that most of these could be prevented if people took proper precautions.

College president Dr Cindy Tromans said: "Bonfire night is a fantastic, fun event but it's important to be as safe as possible.

"While the number of firework-related eye injuries may seem relatively small, they occur year in and year out, demonstrating that there is a serious need to make people aware of the dangers.

"So whether you're having your own fireworks in the garden or are heading to a local display, make sure you follow the firework code to ensure a safe and enjoyable bonfire night."
