Firework safety: Everything you need to know before Bonfire Night

With Bonfire Night fast approaching, the sound of fireworks is becoming increasingly common as excitement builds to the big day.

However, fireworks are exceptionally dangerous and there are a number of rules and laws in place to make sure that fireworks are distributed and used safely. The misuse of fireworks could result in a criminal record, a fine of up to £5000 and even a spell in prison.

As such, here’s everything you need to know prior to Bonfire Night.

-Bonfires must be 18 metres away from any buildings and no more than 2.5m in height. It is recommended that local planned events are attended.

-It is illegal to set off a firework between the hours of 11pm-7am.

-It is prohibited to tamper or misuse fireworks

-Fireworks should not be set off on any main roads, highways or public place without any planning

-It is illegal for a minor (under 18) to have a firework in a public place or to be sold a firework

-Cruelty or causing uncomfort to animals is illegal

While not everyone is a fan of fireworks it is important to be safe if putting on a display and to be mindful of your own safety and the safety of others
