Firefighters battle blaze at block of flats

EIGHT families were evacuated as firefighters battled a serious blaze at a block of flats in Saughton Mains Park this morning.

The fire broke out just before 7am in a top-floor flat in the block of 16, and then spread to two neighbouring flats and the roof of the building.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said it had initially been reported that people were trapped inside the building, but it now appears that all residents escaped unharmed.

Around 40 fire fighters attended and crews were still working to extinguish the fire at 11am.
