Fire deaths show downward trend

FEWER people are dying in fires in Scotland's biggest region.

During 2008-9, a total of 27 people died in fires compared with 35 in 2007-08, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said.

All deaths in 2008-9 were in homes and the average number in Strathclyde between 1998 and 2008 now stands at 40.
