Fire breaks out at Perth nursing home

THREE people were taken to hospital today after a fire started in a nursing home bedroom.

Four fire engines were sent to St Johnstoun's Nursing Home in Perth and eleven residents were evacuated after the blaze began just before 6.20am.

Three ambulances also attended the scene in Barossa Place.

A spokeswoman for Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said: "One resident and two members of staff were taken to hospital as a precaution. Firefighters are still on scene carrying out an investigation.

"The fire was in one of the residents' rooms.

"There were 17 residents and three members of staff at the nursing home at the time the fire started."

The spokeswoman said the fire was put out by 7.44am.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said three people were taken to Perth Royal Infirmary after inhaling smoke from the fire.
