Fined doctor in battle to save career

A DOCTOR fined after a row with neighbours wants appeal judges to clear him because he fears for his job.

GP John McCallum, 50, faces possible disciplinary action by the General Medical Council if his conviction for breach of the peace is allowed to stand, the Justiciary Appeal Court in Edinburgh heard.

A sheriff fined McCallum 2500, calling a row in Merchiston the most outrageous of its kind he had seen. But defence QC Margaret Scott yesterday said his actions in September 2008 did not amount to a breach of the peace.

McCallum and wife, Michele, 50 - fined 2500 for her part in the confrontation with neighbour Rosaline Kinder, 49 - also argue the fines are excessive.

Ms Scott said the GMC was awaiting the outcome of the appeal before deciding if disciplinary action should be taken.

The judges will give a written decision at a later date.
