Fine and ban for fan who threw coin at Rangers star

A FOOTBALL fan who hit Rangers defender David Weir with a 5p coin during a game has been sentenced to community service and banned from matches.

Hamilton supporter Daryl Harvey, 21, was in the main stand at New Douglas Park when his team took on the Ibrox side last February. He threw the coin, which struck Weir on the head.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday, Harvey was sentenced to 90 hours' community service and ordered to pay 250 compensation to Weir.

He was also banned from attending Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League matches, as well as games involving English or Welsh league teams. The one-year ban extends to international matches featuring the home nations.

Sheriff John Miller told Harvey: "This court takes a most serious view of your conduct. It is indeed fortunate for you that Mr Weir was not injured as a result of your actions."

The sheriff said he was prepared to impose a sentence other than a custodial one, but he warned Harvey about his future conduct and told him the penalty would be more severe if he was to appear again on similar charges.
