Find out how beer and pizza can save world

BEER and pizza could be the solution to the world's energy crisis, according to a celebrity scientist who will give a talk in the Capital tomorrow.

Marty Jopson, from the BBC's One Show, will lead "From Bread and Booze to Biofuels: The Future is Yeast", at Edinburgh University.

The lecture, which also runs on Saturday as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, looks at the importance of yeast, showing how the organisms can be used to produce fuel for cars – as well as make carry-outs and pints.

Jopson will ask his audiences to help make bread and brew ginger beer, as well as exploring the explosive properties of carbon dioxide.

Participants should expect "pops, bangs, participation and unlikely experiments".

He will question whether society is on the brink of a revolution, by using yeast to solve the environmental issues of the 21st century.

Tomorrow's event begins at 4pm and Saturday's at 7pm, both in the university's Informatics Forum, on Crichton Street.
