Figures detail bicycle thefts

ONLY one in ten bikes stolen by thieves in Lothian and Borders is recovered again, new figures have shown.

In the three years between 2008 and 2010, 6047 bikes were reported as stolen in the area.

Police figures have shown that only 627 were recovered.

A total of 1866 bikes were stolen in 2008, 2160 in the following year, and 2021 during last year.

Professional gangs are cashing in on the city’s cycling boom, taking bikes from streets, common stairways and sheds.
