Fears of land grab in Africa

GREEN campaigners have said plans for biomass plants such as one earmarked for Leith risk fuelling a "land grab" in Africa.

Friends of the Earth Scotland said new research showed the amount of land being taken in Africa to meet Europe's increasing demand for biofuels was underestimated.

Duncan McLaren, the group's chief executive, said: "This research shows how the rich world's demand for biofuels has triggered a neo-colonial land grab in Africa."
