Fears grow for missing diver

HOPE was fading last night for a scallop diver missing since Thursday afternoon in the seas off the Orkney island of Eday.

The search began after the 33-year-old experienced diver failed to resurface while working from a scallop diving boat in the Bay of London in Eday Sound on the eastern side of the island, 15 miles north of the Orkney mainland.

Kirkwall lifeboat and a Coastguard rescue helicopter from Sumburgh on Shetland began a search on Thursday and fishing boats continued to search by floodlight through the night.

A spokesman for Shetland Coastguard said the rescue helicopter had carried out another search of the area yesterday morning without finding any trace of the missing diver.
