Father and son jailed for attack

A TEENAGER and his father were jailed yesterday for an attack which left the son of Scotland’s top cartoonist with brain damage.

Gordon Gibb, 19, was jailed for three years and nine months when he appeared for sentence at the High Court in Glasgow, for the assault on Sean McCormick, 20.

Gibb’s father, also Gordon, 38, was jailed for six months for his part in the unprovoked attack in Finnie Street, Kilmarnock on 21 April, 2003.

The victim’s father, the cartoonist Malky McCormick, who attended the court yesterday to see the sentence being passed, was furious at the length of terms handed out.

Gibb jnr, of Morven Avenue, Gibb snr, of St Maurs Crescent, and Parminder Singh-Sokhi, 39, of Ardgour Place, all in Kilmarnock, were originally charged with attempted murder.

Gibb jnr admitted punching and kicking his victim repeatedly to his severe injury and danger of his life. His father admitted punching him in the face while Singh-Sokhi pleaded guilty to breach of the peace.

Martin Jones, QC, defending, claimed that Gibb snr had shown "genuine remorse" for his attack on Mr McCormick.

Gibb jnr admitted earlier to stamping on Mr McCormick jnr’s head, fracturing his skull and causing brain damage, as he lay unconscious outside Colors nightclub after being punched by Gibb snr.

Mr McCormick snr said after the hearing yesterday: "There is no justice in these sentences today. They were laughing all the way to jail and my son is badly disabled."

The court heard the victim will require long-term treatment following the attack.
