Fatality at accident black spot

A 42-YEAR-OLD mother has died after an accident on a road in Ayrshire which is a notorious accident black spot.

The woman, who has not been named, died on Sunday evening after a Toyota Avensis went out of control and left the A76 in Cumnock, ending up in a field.

The woman's two children, aged four and 12, were in the back of the car, but suffered only minor injuries.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to try to free the woman from the vehicle and paramedics battled to save her life, but she died on the scene.

The 36-year-old father of the children, who was driving the car, was rushed to Ayr Hospital, where his condition is said to be serious.

Campaigners have long spoken about the unacceptable number of fatal accidents along the A76, saying the road needs to be upgraded to make it safer.

Conservative MP David Mundell, who has campaigned for the upgrade, said he was concerned to hear of the latest fatal accident on what he called Scotland's "forgotten road".
