Family vow to remember murdered newlyweds

RELATIVES of a couple murdered on their honeymoon are renewing efforts to keep their memory alive, starting with a charity swim in Scotland.

Last week two men were convicted of murdering Welsh newlyweds Ben and Catherine Mullany - exactly three years to the day after the 31-year-olds were gunned down during a dawn raid on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Kaniel Martin, 23, and Avie Howell, 20, who also shot dead a local shopkeeper, could now face the death penalty.

While family and friends of doctor Mrs Mullany and her student physiotherapist husband say they will never come to terms with their loss, they have vowed to make sure their deaths were not in vain.

In the wake of their murders, an educational charity called the Mullany Fund was set up and aims to get more youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds working in the field of medicine.

The fight to carry on the couple's good work is now set to continue, following a pause in its activities during the eight-week trial of Martin and Howell.

A family friend, Catrin Jones, will reignite the charity's activities when she undertakes a swim in a Scottish loch next month.

The 35-year-old is to swim 1.25 miles (2km) through Strathclyde Loch in Strathclyde Country Park to raise money for the Mullany Fund.

Carmarthen-born Miss Jones, who works in London, has so far managed to raise 500 for the cause ahead of taking part in the Great Scottish Swim on 24 September.

She has been training regularly in Hampstead Heath's outdoor swimming pool.
