Fair trading earns firms the plaudits of the Lord Provost

A SERIES of winners have been announced in the annual celebration of companies that promote fair trade in Edinburgh.

Earthy, a cafe in Newington, was named as the best newcomer at the Lord Provost's fair trade awards, while the cafe at Edinburgh University's chaplaincy scooped the community award.

Wardie Parish Church won the best fair trade faith community award and Equal Exchange won the best fair trade award.

The awards, which took place at Cafe Camino on York Place, included a speech from Palestinian fair trade olive oil producer Um Shehadeh.

Lord Provost George Grubb said: "We've been doing the Lord Provost Fair Trade Awards for a number of years now and it's wonderful to see how much things have evolved since we first started."
