Factory closure
hits 50 workers

Almost 50 workers face redundancy with the closure of a factory that employs disabled people.

Remploy’s Springburn site in Glasgow is to shut after no viable bidders for the business, which produces wheelchairs for the NHS, came forward.

A spokesman said 49 workers were at risk of redundancy, 45 of whom are disabled.

The site was one of the Remploy factories deemed not commercially viable. It lost £187,000 last year, according to the Department for Work and Pensions.

A spokeswoman said yesterday: “Any disabled people who are made redundant from Springburn can benefit from an £8 million package of support for those affected across Britain, including a case worker to help individuals with their future choices, as well as access to a personal budget.”
