Explorer's life mapped out

THE inaugural meeting of the Polwarth Church Speakers Club will take place on 6 February.

Local author Jim McCarthy will give an illustrated talk, Journey into Africa: The Life and Death of Keith Johnston, Scottish Cartographer and Explorer.

He will talk about Johnston's background in Edinburgh, his attempts to forge a route from the Indian Ocean to the Central Lakes of Africa, and his last journey, which ended in his early death in a Tanzanian village.

The talk begins at 7:30pm.
