Ex-student killed in fall from glider

A FORMER Edinburgh University student has fallen to her death in front of her boyfriend after the wings of her glider fell off.

Amy Barsby, 25, was killed instantly while taking part in an inter-university gliding competition in Oxfordshire.

Her boyfriend, Bruce Duncan, a gliding instructor originally from Aberdeen, was watching at the time.

The couple met seven years ago while studying and had bought a house together in the Capital last year.

Amy's father Steven Barsby said: "She was undergoing to launch and she reached the right height when her partner, who was witnessing it, saw a wing separate.

"It sounds like they more or less came away at the same time and then it plunged down to the ground. It was all over in a few seconds."

Amy, who came from Longridge, near Preston, had 10 years' experience of flying gliders.

Her family said her funeral would be held in Edinburgh because it was "somewhere that she loved".
