Evening News shines at Scottish Press Awards

Associate Editor Gina Davidson was awarded the prestigious title of Journalist of the Year; the News won Scoop of the Year for breaking the Mortonhall baby ashes scandal, while Dale Miller, David O’Leary, David McCann and Gina Davidson won the Team of the Year award for our ongoing coverage of Mortonhall.

The paper was also shortlisted for its coverage of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and for our front page “Revenge of the Trams”.

The News has now won a total of 13 awards in the last four months for its journalism, including prizes for our coverage of the all-Edinburgh Cup Final and Edinburgh’s Got Talent. The News was named UK Daily Newspaper of the Year at the recent JP Awards.

Your paper has also been shortlisted four times for the forthcoming UK Regional Press Awards in London underlining that the title remains the first place to turn to for news in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Editor Frank O’Donnell said: “These awards are further recognition of the high quality journalism that our hard-working team produces every day.”

The Evening News’ sister titles, The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday, also took a number of titles at last night’s event.

Ian Rutherford was named News Photographer of the Year, while Dani Garavelli won Feature Writer of the Year. Aidan Smith won Sports Feature Writer of the Year for the second year in succession.

Another Johnston Press title, the Falkirk Herald, was named Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

A spokesman for the judges: “The standard of this year’s entries has been particularly high.”
