European champs will help me hit my fundraising goal

A DAD is to drive 7000 miles across Europe visiting every European Cup-winning club on the way to raise money to help his son and others who suffer similar conditions.

Robin Blacklock, whose son Angus, seven, was born with just one ear, was inspired by his courage and pledged to raise 100,000 by travelling across Europe meeting footballing legends along the way.

The chartered surveyor, who lives in Aberlady, East Lothian, hopes to raise donations by completing his epic journey.

He has also been given footballs used by Adidas in big league games and hopes to auction them off after having them signed by some of the sport's greatest talents.

The 35-year-old was set to launch his EuroChampsChallenge today at Celtic Park and aims to raise the cash for the Sick Kids hospital, where Angus has received much of his treatment, and Changing Faces, which supports people with disfigurements.

Among the who's who of footballers who have agreed to support the fundraiser are Germany's Gerd Muller, of Bayern Munich and Italian legend Franco Baresi of AC Milan, who the fundraising team have labelled Medallion Men.

Mr Blacklock and two friends will drive 500 miles each day to visit the 21 teams in 14 days.

He said: "The Medallion Man is the name we've given to those players who've won that cup. What makes it special is meeting someone who has played in these great finals, because there aren't that many."

Mr Blacklock says he realises that 100,000 is a steep goal, so has already franchised out his campaign - starting with his wife. He said: "From donations alone it is very challenging so we've come up with other ideas to raise money.

"My wife is running the Edinburgh half marathon along with 11 of her friends. Hopefully all together we can reach that goal."

Mr Blacklock says he has had a lot of support already from clubs including Hearts, Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen, but gets the most inspiration from Angus.

He said: "Angus was born with microtia, meaning he only has one ear and his palate and mouth wasn't properly formed. He has had one major operation so far and we're awaiting news of another to correct his speech.

"Angus has had most of his treatment and support at the Sick Kids, while Changing Faces have been great at supporting our family.

"What I've realised over the years is there comes a point, were you're asking him to do things which are uncomfortable and unpleasant, but he puts a face on and just says 'I'm going to get through it'.

"It's just that point where you see the maturity and resilience and determination. And you think if he had get through that then I can do something."It's taking inspiration from what he's been through and doing something about it."
