Weather warning: Met Office issues yellow rain warning across Scotland for today and tomorrow

The Met Office has warned that heavy rain will affect parts of the country this afternoon and the early hours of tomorrow which will lead to ‘some disruption’ due to flooding.

The update comes due to the increased likelihood of impact from heavy rain across the country and extends previous rain warnings into the early hours of Thursday.

A yellow rain warning of ‘heavy rain’ has been issued for Tayside, the Grampians, Strathclyde, and the Highlands.

It is expected to hit between 2pm today and 3am tomorrow and will mainly affect the North West of Scotland, according to weather experts.

In Strathclyde, areas affected include Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire and West Dunbartonshire.

Specific areas subject to rainfall across the country also include Angus, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Aberdeenshire, Highlands, Na h-Eileanan Siar and Dumfries and Galloway.

The rainfall will lead to ‘some disruption likely due to flooding’ according to the Met Office.

The Met Office has stated that rainfall of around 40-55mm are widely expected within the warning area and potential for 80mm over some high ground, particularly within the Highlands and southern Grampians.

Spray and flooding on roads is expected across these areas and bus and train services will probably be affected with journey times taking longer.

Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible.

In a statement, the Met Office wrote: “The band of rain will persist throughout Wednesday, easing and clearing eastwards into the early hours of Thursday. Rainfall totals of 40-50 mm widely expected within the warning area and potential for 80 mm over some high ground, notably the Highlands and southern Grampians. The rain will be accompanied by strong southerly winds.”
