Scotland’s weather: Nationwide freeze to continue

Temperatures fell as low as -11C overnight and into the morning in parts of inland Scotland and forecasters have warned there will be no respite from the plummeting mercury.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning - the second highest - for icy conditions across most of England, including the North, Midlands and East Anglia, until midday on Thursday.

An alert on its website said: “Large areas of England will experience colder than average conditions in the coming week, with widespread overnight frosts. Some wintry precipitation is expected for most areas too, mostly in the form of scattered showers, leading to lying snow and icy stretches.”

The coldest temperature measured at -11.2C at Loch Glascarnoch, in Scotland, beating the previous record low this winter of -9C, set on December 27, in Cromdale, Moray.

Tom Tobler, a forecaster at MeteoGroup, warned of a weather front which could herald snow tomorrow or Wednesday.

He said: “It’s going to be very cold again tonight, certainly below zero pretty much everywhere. Temperatures could be minus 3C or 4C in England and Wales and in Scotland we could see -10C.

“There’s a front coming through Tuesday and Wednesday which might bring some snow, mostly in northern parts of the country. Parts of England could get snow but it won’t be huge amounts.”
