Reward offered for recovery of basking shark tag

SCIENTISTS have offered a reward for the safe return of a basking shark tag which contains details of its movements off the west coast of Scotland.

Scottish Natural Heritage is hoping the public can locate the tag which last gave out a signal in the Neist Point area of Glendale on Skye.

The device was part of a project to learn more about the shark’s movement patterns.

A reward of around £100 has been offered.

The baton-shaped tag is 15cm long, made of black rubber and may have an antennae attached.

Earlier this year, satellite tracking devices were attached to 20 sharks in the seas around the Inner Hebrides, a popular feeding area for the world’s second largest fish after the whale shark.

The tags are designed to eventually fall off the sharks and float to the surface. They contain valuable data about each shark’s movements.
