Northern Lights seen on Isle of Skye and in Dundee

SCOTLAND was treated to yet another spectacular display of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis last night.

Photographer Andrew Woodhouse captured a stunning image of the phenomenon on the Isle of Skye.

Andrew took the photos just after 11.30pm in Ashaig, near Broadford, on the island.

And a picture taken by Corinne Mills shows the sky above Dundee as seen from north east Fife on Thursday evening.

Tinting the sky with blues, purples, greens and oranges, the aurora also included rarer pinks and reds.

The phenomenon was experienced in Fife as well as further north, with residents in Ness, on the isle of Lewis also getting a stunning display of the Northern Lights.

The fantastic light display is caused by charged particles entering the atmosphere from above, leading to ionisation and excitation of the atmospheric constituents.

This then brings about optical emission, which are what we see in the sky.
