Ewan Miles took the photograph at 2am on Thursday on the island’s north shore.

Miles said: “This display was extra special because it was in early august with very little true astronomical darkness. This year is the solar max, when the sun releases more energy and an increased chances of aurora.”

Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are more commonly seen in Scandinavia and other locations above the Arctic Circle, but have been spotted from the outskirts of Aberdeen in the recent past.
