A new television series is promising to take viewers behind the scenes at Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park.

New TV series to go behind the scenes at Edinburgh Zoo

The eight-part series, Inside the Zoo, will follow staff at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) as they go about their work at the popular visitor attractions.

The series, which will air in September on the new BBC Scotland channel, charts everyday life for wildlife conservation charity, from the birth of lion cubs to what is describe as a “particularly grumpy” guinea fowl.

David Field, chief executive officer of the RZSS, said: “We are so excited to have the hard work and passion of our amazing teams showcased in this new series. Our staff do incredible work caring for the animals at our parks, with all their different personalities and quirks, and protecting endangered species in the wild.

“Inside The Zoo gives people the chance to see just what it takes to give lion cubs their first health check, put on a giant lantern event, weigh a polar bear cub and so much more.”

The series, narrated by Gail Porter, was filmed prior to the coronavirus pandemic. It will air at 8pm on successive Mondays on the new channel from 7 September.

Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park reopened at the end of June after being closed for three months. A crowdfunding campaign was set up to help address their revenue shortfall during the pandemic.
