Mitchelston Midden: Fife's 'worst fly-tipping site' transformed into new floodlit and CCTV-monitored storage facility in Kirkcaldy

Land previously dubbed ‘Fife’s worst fly-tipping site’ in Kirkcaldy has been transformed into a new CCTV-monitored storage facility after 150 tonnes of rubbish was removed.

The site at Mitchelston Industrial Estate’s Myregormie Place in Kirkcaldy was a hotspot for dumping rubbish for over 10 years.

Previously, litter was scattered across a wasteland of debris which was once home to the Production Glassfibre factory.

Now new owner North Star Storage has now transformed the “Mitchelston Midden” into a floodlit storage facility with 24/7 CCTV in place.

Tim Reid, owner of North Star Storage said: “It hasn’t been easy, we had to move over 150 tonnes of rubbish at our expense but it has been worth it.

"We completely re-fenced and resurfaced the whole site and put in number plate recognition software, CCTV and made sure it was fully secure and now we are open for business.”

Heavy duty padlocks are also being offered to customers free of charge.

Mr Reid who bought the land in August 2020 has said that neighbouring property owners have been ‘very supportive and pleased’ with what North Star Storage has been doing to transform the site which offers its customers round-the-clock access.

Mr Reid added: “It’s great as it feels much safer and more secure and generally more upbeat.”

"We only opened a day or two ago and we’ve got a handful of customers but we are hoping more people will start to come to it through word of mouth.

"People can book along via our website and come along and collect their keys.”
