Midweek weather alert

Gales of between 75mph and 93mph battered the Northern Isles throughout Christmas Day.

At the top of Cairn Gorm, wind speeds of up to 140mph were recorded during the afternoon, with the Met Office issuing an amber alert for the north-west throughout the day and into the evening, warning the public to be prepared for the risk of disruption to transport and power, and possible structural damage.

Though the gales were expected to abate today, the Met Office has forecast further disruption due to wind later in the week and has posted a weather warning for Scotland on Wednesday, with Glasgow and Edinburgh both at risk and the possibility of disrupted flights.
