Hurricane Katia hits travellers and homes as storms sweep across Scotland

A FALLEN tree in The Meadows in Edinburgh was among the remnants of Hurricane Katia as it battered Scotland.

On Monday, stormy weather disrupted road, rail and ferry travel and left hundreds of homes without power.

At the height of the storm, winds reached 72mph in Glasgow and 85mph in Glen Ogle, Stirlingshire.

Although it calmed yesterday, motorists are still advised to take care.

Transport minister Keith Brown advised people to check the latest travel information before setting off on journeys.

He said: “More strong winds and heavy rain is forecast, making travel conditions difficult – in particular the impact high winds could have on traffic over our bridges. While we are all working hard to keep Scotland moving, it’s important the travelling public are prepared.”

In Ayrshire and Dumfries, around 200 ScottishPower customers were left without electricity, while ScotRail said that some rail services had been disrupted.
