Greenpeace storms VW garages

GREENPEACE activists targeted VW dealerships across the UK and Europe yesterday to protest against the car giant’s record on climate change.

Environmentalists dressed as Star Wars stormtroopers swarmed across garages in Glasgow, London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and Newcastle. They claimed that the German manufacturer lobbies against key environmental laws despite having carefully created a pro-family, green image.

Greenpeace accused VW, Europe’s largest car manufacturer, of using its huge political clout to lobby against stricter environmental regulations and failing to reduce petrol consumption in its cars as quickly as other brands, despite its aim of becoming “the most eco-friendly automaker in the world”.

Greenpeace used the Star Wars theme after VW’s one-minute film of a mini Darth Vader became the most viewed online advert in history.

No-one from VW was available for comment yesterday.
