Glasgow homes flooded by burst water main

TENS of thousands of households in the Glasgow area have been left without water with many flooded after a main burst early this morning.

The burst main has hit the water supplies to up to 23,000 properties in the Bearsden and Maryhill areas while 20 homes in the area were also flooded.

It occurred shortly after 5am on Maryhill Road near its junction with Coronation Way, just south of Canniesburn Toll.

Scottish Water engineers have been working to restore supplies at the burst site in Bearsden, which has flooded some properties and caused traffic disruption close to the affected mains.

The spokesman said that the flooding had affected mainly gardens but in some cases water entered properties.

A Scottish Water spokesman said that efforts were focused on re-zoning the network and bringing in supplies from other areas, and that 12,500 properties could expect to see their water resuming soon.

He said: “We anticipate that a significant number of affected properties will have their normal supplies restored this afternoon. This is due to it being a large network that requires to be re-filled.

“We will work to restore supplies to other affected customers as soon as possible.

“The road has been closed following the burst. It is anticipated that the repair to the water main and the reinstatement of the road might take some time to complete.”

He said that there was currently no indication as to what had caused the mains to burst.

Customers are advised that when normal supplies are restored they might experience some discolouration in their water and should run the cold tap in their kitchen until their water runs clear.

Strathclyde Police said that local traffic diversions were in place.
