The kitten, who had replaced Towser - one of the world’s most famous distillery cats - as the distillery’s Official Mouser at the Famous Grouse Experience in June, was found injured at the side of the road earlier this week.

Despite veterinary care, the cat died on Monday in the arms of Distillery Manager Neil Cameron.

Peat had proved a hit with tourists during the summer months, while making a name for himself in international media.

A Twitter account set up for the feline has attracted over 800 followers.

Lesley Williamson, Business Development Manager of the Famous Grouse Experience said that the Distillery team were ‘heartbroken’, adding: “Peat had charmed his way into everyone’s hearts and his final day, which was also his first day of freedom in the world, highlighted how much fun he brought to the team.

“His first act was to get stuck up a tree and, once we’d rescued him from that situation, he then decided to make friends with a golden retriever which made for an interesting few moments.

“He was inquisitive, fearless and a social cat and we will all miss him terribly.”
