Contest to name baby beavers

A COMPETITION has been launched to name the first beaver kits born into the wild in Scotland for hundreds of years.

Environment minister Stewart Stevenson kicked off the contest yesterday in Knapdale Forest, Argyll.

The winning names will be announced by the Scottish Beaver Trial later this year. Beavers had been extinct in Scotland for hundreds of years until the reintroduction for a five-year assessment.

Mr Stevenson said: “It is great news that this landmark trial has proven successful in breeding its first kits last year.”
