Cat found in Cumbernauld bin

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat was found in a bin in Cumbernauld earlier this month.

The cat was named Dusty by Scottish SPCA staff, but sadly was later put to sleep

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Wednesday, May 2, after a member of public handed the male feline in to Lawrie Vets on Kenilworth Court.

Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Stephanie Kirk said, “We’re keen to determine if the cat was deliberately placed in the bin, or if he fell in.

“Unfortunately we don’t know exactly where he was found so we’re hoping someone saw something suspicious.

“The cat, named Dusty by staff at our centre in Glasgow, was blind and suffered from a neurological condition.

“Sadly, due to his condition the decision was made by a veterinary professional that the kindest thing was to put him to sleep.

“If this has been done on purpose it is not only an unusually cruel incident but it is also an offence. We now ask that anyone with information to get in touch.”

The Scottish SPCA has published its Celebrating 2017 document revealing its work and achievements last year.

Highlights include: reaching 63 per cent of Scottish schools through its free Prevention through Education programme; 70 successful court cases which resulted in 52 bans and 302 animals seized; rehoming 5410 animals; and a record number of wild animals rescued including 177 seals.
