Caithness Northern Lights show ‘better than fireworks’

THIS was the remarkable natural display one man witnessed on New Year’s Eve - which rivalled the best fireworks.

Amateur photographer Maciej Winiarczyk was treated to a stunning show of the Northern Lights as the rest of the UK welcomed 2016.

The self-confessed ‘aurora hunter’ celebrated alone by watching “pulsating clouds” which looked like “disco lights.”

The light spectacular took place in the skies above Caithness in northern Scotland and Maciej was standing on remote Reiss beach.

He said: “You always feel amazed when you see them but it was different this year.

“There were pulsating clouds of light. It was very quick - like disco lights.

“This was just for 20 minutes.”

Maciej, 43, who was born in Szczecinek and now lives in Wick, has been snapping the aurora borealis for four years.

He added: “Every show is different.

“Here in Scotland it is very good for night-time photography. There is not a lot of light pollution. We have perfect conditions.

“It is much better than fireworks.”
