Elderly woman dies in house fire

A PENSIONER in Ayr has died after being pulled from her burning home by firefighters.

Two fire crews were sent to the elderly woman's home in the town's Bentfield Avenue late yesterday afternoon.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 70s, died at the scene.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said:

"An elderly lady was rescued by firefighters, but despite their efforts, the lady sadly died at the scene.

"The cause of this fire is the subject of a joint investigation which will be carried out by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's Fire Investigation team and Strathclyde Police."
