Eight taken to hospital after Glasgow tenement blaze

FOUR adults and four children were taken to hospital after being rescued from a burning building in the Maryhill area of Glasgow today.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at a four-storey block of flats in Acre Drive at about 3am.

A man and a woman, who were rescued from a ground-floor property where the fire started, were rushed to the city’s Western Infirmary and were said to be “giving cause for concern”.

Two other adults and four children, all suffering from slight smoke inhalation, received oxygen at the scene before being taken to Yorkhill Hospital for precautionary checks.

Fire crews are said to have battled through “severe heat and dense smoke” to reach the casualties.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire.
