Edinburgh weather: More snow forecast

MORE snow is on its way to the Capital as the cold snap continues into the weekend.

Wintry showers are predicted for tomorrow, with temperatures set to plunge after a brief spell of sunshine.

Travel disruption is expected on the roads, while Edinburgh Airport said snow teams would remain on standby.

An airport spokesman stressed that no flights had been cancelled, but said passengers should check with their airline and allow extra time for their journeys to the terminal.

Winds are forecast to become lighter today, the Met Office said, with maximum temperatures of just 4C.

The outlook between tomorrow and Sunday is set to include further wintry showers, with sleet or rain on low ground.

A Met Office spokesman said it would turn much colder over the weekend, with snow showers likely.

Matthew Martin, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, added: “This evening and Friday will be slightly less cold, then there will be a colder Arctic flow on Saturday, bringing snow which will be generally restricted to coastal areas and remaining very cold into early next week.”

Meanwhile, Musselburgh is braced for “an interesting few days” of weather which could disrupt preparation ahead of a major event on Sunday.

Scottish Cheltenham Trials Day has lured a strong field to the East Lothian racecourse, but heavy snow and freezing temperatures have been forecast.

Clerk of the course Harriet Graham said she remained upbeat that the meeting could beat the elements.

She said: “At this stage, we are moderately confident of racing. It is, however, a very tricky forecast. I have spoken to the Met Office and they have pretty high confidence we will have a few more heavy snow showers in the next 24 hours.

“The snow is meant to have moved through by tomorrow, which will hopefully give us the chance to put down further covers.

“The take-off and landing areas are covered, but we have to wait for the snow to pass through before we can take any further action.”

Edinburgh and the Lothians was braced for snow showers this morning, with difficult travelling conditions expected, especially over the higher routes.

Councillor Lesley Hinds, transport convener, said: “We will continue to monitor the weather situation closely, with our gritting teams treating the roads and pavements as required, based on detailed forecasts from the Met Office.

“The council website’s winter weather pages also contain lots of useful information on how to deal with severe weather, and I would urge anyone planning to travel to take a look before heading out.”
