Edinburgh in national sports centre bid

EDINBURGH is in the running to become the home of Scotland’s National Performance Centre for Sport.

A bid from Heriot-Watt University to host the new centre has been shortlisted along with ones from Dundee City Council and Stirling University and Stirling Council.

The Scottish Government has committed up to £25m towards the cost of creating the NPCS, and has set a timescale of early 2016 for its completion. An announcement on the preferred bidder will be made in be summer.

The shortlist announcement means bids from Midlothian, Perth and Kinross and St Andrews University were unsuccessful.

Heriot-Watt principal Professor Steve Chapman said “Our desire is to create a world-class sporting facility that will have a positive impact on the preparation of our athletes, readying them to compete successfully on the world stage.”
