Edinburgh heroin dealer told to hand over £185k

William Cassels Junior, 47, was sentenced to six years imprisonment after admitting being concerned in the supply of heroin.

Police caught Cassels at a house in Edinburgh with more than two kilos of the Class A drug.

Other raids found £178,000 of “dirty money” at a pensioner’s home in Musselburgh which Cassels had stored in May last year.

The Crown began proceedings to seize crime profits from Cassels, formerly of Saughton Mains Crescent, in Edinburgh following the seizures.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard today that a settlement in the action had been reached and a confiscation order for £185,790 was made with Cassels given two months to pay it.

Police had carried out an investigation targeting drug dealing in Edinburgh in the spring of last year and undercover officers bought pounds 20 deals of heroin from Cassels’ former co-accused Brian Young, 43..

Following the undercover operation officers armed with search warrants carried out several raids in the city.

Police forced entry to the home of Cassels’ brother in Rosemount Buildings and found Cassels sitting on the floor with a set of scales and an open bag of brown powder.

He told officers who detained him: “I’m going to tell them I found the stuff in a bag outside and just brought it into the flat.”

He also said: “I don’t sell to kids though, I never do that.” He added: “I do what I do.”

Heroin worth a total of £135,235 on the streets was recovered during the police operation.
