Edinburgh-based duo win world coding competition

TWO students from Edinburgh University have triumphed over 49,000 teams worldwide to win this year’s Codevita, one of the largest coding competitions in the world.

Marijonas Petrauskas and Karolis Greblikas emerged victorious after a 15-team, six-hour final in which competitors attempted to solve coding problems and algorithms.

The duo will receive $10,000 (around £6,500) and a paid internship opportunity with competition sponsors Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

The global technology firm has been running Codevita for three years.

This year’s final in Mumbai welcomed nine university teams from India, two from the UK (including this year’s winners), two from Peru and a team each from the US and Canada.

Second place went to the one of the Indian teams, while a Peru duo claimed third. They will receive $7,000 and $3,000, respectively.

All 30 individual finalists will receive internship offers from TCS.

TCS chief Natarajan Chandrasekaran said: “As world goes Digital and technology increases its impact on our lives, it is important for young students to learn the art of coding, the ability to leverage technology and building application and solutions.

“It is a vehicle to unleash their creativity to make new things and have an impact on those around them.

“Global Competitions like TCS CodeVita help us engage with young students from across the world in a very inter-active and engaging manner.”

TCS was India’s largest share flotation after its 2004 debut.
