Edinburgh Accies wall collapses due to weather

The birthplace of Scottish rugby has taken a hit after frosty weather caused a section of its barrier wall to collapse.

Council workers were forced to remove a 
30-metre chunk of rock wall and fencing from the Edinburgh Academicals’ playing grounds at Raeburn Place after a heavy frost brought it crashing down into the car park.

A spokeswoman for the club said: “A small section of the wall, which has been in a ‘fragile’ condition for some time, collapsed as a result of the first frost of the winter.

“The upkeep of the wall is the responsibility of the council, who had erected temporary barriers as a protective measure earlier this year.

“We notified the council and they returned to site to make the area safe. In doing so, they extended the area of wall removed to approximately 30 metres.”

The city council insisted that the site had been “made safe for the public”, and said the barrier might not see permanent repair until the Academicals begin construction on their controversial new £8 million stadium in Stockbridge.
