EDF handed bumper deal

FRENCH energy company EDF, which owns Torness nuclear power station in East Lothian, has won a £600 million electricity deal from the Scottish Government.

EDF beat Scottish Power and Scottish & Southern Energy to win the three-year contract to supply almost every school, hospital and council building in the country.

The contract had previously been held jointly by the other two companies.

The move prompted criticism that the SNP was going against its policy of opposing nuclear power.
