Eco house's revamp must be scrapped

ALTERATIONS to the surroundings of an eco house in Eskbank will have to be removed after planners refused retrospective planning permission.

Gerry Goldwyre applied for the permission for alterations which had been made without consent on the land opposite The Water Tower in Cemetery Road. The changes included the creation of a boundary fence, timber decking and alterations to woodland access steps.

The application raised 15 objections and 18 letters of support. Those opposed to the changes, including Esk Valley Trust and Eskbank Amenity Society, said they were concerned about the impact on wildlife and the effect on the setting of Ironmills Park. Those in favour said the work was a good model of environmentally friendly design.

Midlothian Council planning committee refused decision by eight votes to six. The Goldwyres have said they plan appeal against the decision.
