The teenager fled empty handed after threatening the 67-year-old female shop assistant with a weapon at the newsagent’s shop in the Hilltown area of the city yesterday afternoon.

A Police Scotland spokesman explained: “The youth – thought be aged about 16-17-years-old – entered the store at about 4.45pm, picked up an item and went to the counter apparently to pay for it.

“He then presented a weapon at a staff member – a 67-year-old woman – and demanded money. She refused and he ran off.”

He continued: “The suspect, who spoke with a Dundee accent, is about 5ft tall and of medium build. He has short, dirty blonde hair and at the time was wearing a plain green-coloured hooded top, with the hood down.”

The spokesman added: “A review of CCTV coverage is underway and police officers are carrying out door-to-door enquiries as part of the investigation. Officers are aware that the Hilltown area would have been busy around the time of the incident.

“As such they would appeal to anyone who was in the area, whether on foot or travelling through by car or public transport to get in touch, as they may be able to provide useful information. Anyone who can assist should call Police Scotland on 101 or speak to any officer.”
