• Bannatyne suffers from prosopagnosia, or face blindness: "I can have a two-hour meeting with someone and then not recognise them at dinner four hours later."

• On starting out: "When you've got a criminal record, no qualifications, no references, the best option is starting your own business because no-one can stop you."

• Bannatyne was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to charity. He also received an honorary Doctorate of Science from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2006.

• He appeared in a non-speaking role in the 2007 film Revolver directed by Guy Ritchie, left, bidding 8,000 at a charity auction for the part.

• On his roots: "Am I still the scruffy boy from Clydebank? Of course I am ... it's just now I can afford to buy every other boy in the country a bike."
