Drumbrae shooting: Police return to scene

Shots were fired at a house on Drum Brae Terrace late last Friday night while a woman, a teenage boy and a man were inside.

No-one was injured in the incident – which left an upstairs window smashed – and it is believed the unknown gunman targeted the wrong house.

Last night, officers returned to the scene of the shooting to speak to residents in an attempt to follow up fresh lines of inquiry.

The incident in Drumbrae was the fourth shooting reported in the Capital in recent weeks, with police linking two drive-by shootings in Gilmerton on September 20 with a firearms incident in Fernieside Avenue, Moredun, two weeks earlier.

Chief Inspector Graham McInarlin said last night’s police patrols were being carried out “with the aim of speaking to anyone who was in the area a week ago or may have seen or heard anything suspicious”.

He added: “High-visibility patrols have been carried out over the past week, to provide reassurance to local people as well as give the opportunity for them to pass on any information which may assist the inquiry.

“I would like to thank the community for their assistance and support following this incident, which is highly unusual for the area.

“Police Scotland will not tolerate such reckless and dangerous acts and we are committing significant resources into identifying those responsible and bringing them to justice.”

Police have said they want to speak to a man in a light-coloured top and black jogging bottoms who was seen at the time of the incident, with a car also spotted being driven off the road and on to a grassy area nearby.

Community leaders today spoke of a quiet neighbourhood “shocked and unsettled” by the shootings.

Drumbrae councillor Robert Aldridge said it was the hot topic amongst residents and praised police for their response in keeping the community calm.

Councillor Aldridge said: “Going round the streets, everybody is talking about the shooting.

“I think everybody is quite understandably shocked and unsettled, but I think the police have been doing a really good job trying to reassure people with patrols.

“It’s a very unusual thing to happen in the area.

“It’s a very quiet area, and as a result the impact has been quite major.

“The sooner we find the culprits and get them charged, the better for the local community.”

Councillor Ronald Cairns added: “I was very shocked to have this up in Drumbrae.

“To me, it was right out the blue.”
