Drug trafficker ordered to hand over £7000 in crime profits

A mechanic who was awaiting trial for cocaine trafficking and went back to the illegal trade while out of bail has been ordered to hand over £7000 in crime profits.

Jeffrey Crombie, 43, was jailed for four years last year after he admitted being concerned in the supply of the Class A drugs between January 2008 and January last year. He was given a further two months after being on bail for part of the time.

The Crown raised an action against Crombie to confiscate any proceeds of crime.

But a judge at the High Court in Edinburgh was told that a settlement had been reached in the proceedings.

Advocate depute Barry Divers asked Lady Stacey to record the proceeds of Crombie's criminal conduct at 7000 and to make a confiscation order in the same sum.

The judge said that Crombie, who is a prisoner in Edinburgh's Saughton jail, would be given three months to pay the sum.

Crombie's home in Brandon Street, in Edinburgh, came under watch after police received a tip-off and they observed him parking his black BMW and taking two carrier bags into the common stair.

Police found more than 2000 in cash during a search and drugs recovered could have fetched up to 6800 on the street.

Crombie spent a week in custody but was released on bail at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on November 16 in 2009.

But police later received a further tip-off and found Crombie's BMW parked outside the home of friends. In a bin in the garden they found a bag containing cocaine with a street value of 18,800 which Crombie admitted was his.
