Drivers face roads chaos

MOTORISTS in the West End are being warned they face disruption as part of a £51,000 project to replace ageing gas mains.

Utility firm Scotia Gas Networks (SGN) said the repairs in Belford Road will begin on October 18 and take seven weeks to complete

The project is part of a city-wide programme of works to replace old gas pipes which is set to take more than 20 years to complete.

SGN is replacing Edinburgh's ageing gas mains - which stretch the same distance as Edinburgh to London - as part of a UK-wide safety drive.

Around half of the city's 850-mile network is being dug up after a ruling from the Health and Safety Executive that old iron mains had to be replaced with new plastic pipes.
